BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- Former UAB women's soccer goalkeeper Lisa Nowoslawski has been awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, it was announced.
Nowoslawski is one of 29 women's fall sport athletes nationally to receive the prestigious honor and intends to use the scholarship to attend medical school in the fall of 2004.
"I am thrilled that the NCAA has chosen to honor Lisa in this manner," said UAB head coach Paul Harbin. "Lisa has been an amazing part of our program here at UAB. Athletically and academically, she has set standards which will be tough to compete with for years to come. Without question, the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship will be well invested."
Nowoslawki ended her career at UAB after the 2002 season, but not before putting her name all over the Blazer record book. Nowoslawski is UAB's season leader in most saves (103 in 2001), highest save percentage (.824 in 2001), most saves per game (5.15 in 2001), least goals allowed (22 in 2001 and 1999), and best goals allowed average (1.13 in 2001). She's also the Blazers' career leader in most saves (327), most minutes played (5,836) and most wins (29).
The NCAA awards 174 postgraduate scholarships annually, 87 for men and 87 for women. The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are in their last year of intercollegiate athletics competition. The one-time grants of $6,900 each are awarded for fall, winter and spring sports. Fifty-eight scholarships are awarded for each category, 29 scholarships going to both men and women.
To qualify for a NCAA postgraduate scholarship, a student-athlete must have an overall grade-point average of 3.200 (on a 4.000 scale) or its equivalent and must have preformed with distinction as a member of their varsity team. Candidates are screened by seven regional selection committees and winners are selected by the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Committee.
