BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- After starting play with singles, the UAB women's tennis team (6-4, 2-1) won all five singles matches en route to defeating the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, 5-0, here Saturday afternoon at Brook Highland Racquet Club. The two teams elected not to play doubles, after the match was already won by the Blazers.
"Obviously, I'm happy with the result," said UAB head coach Mert Ertunga. "ULL was short-handed today and that was a factor. It was a bonus for us that our team played so well."
UAB's Natascha Immele snapped her two-match losing streak by beating Louisiana-Lafayette's Robin Singh, 6-1, 6-3, in the No. 1 match. Blazer Femke de Boer was victorious at the No. 2 position, beating ULL's Thais Bortoletto, 6-0, 6-2.
In the No. 3 match, UAB's Ornischa Maier-Knapp defeated the Ragin' Cajun's Susan Linden, 6-3, 6-3. Louisiana-Lafayette's Fernanda Kompatsher fell to Blazer Yvonne Ernst, 6-0, 6-2, at the No. 4 position. Finally, in the No. 5 match, UAB's Julia Hoch beat Louisiana-Lafayette's Lucia Lasso, 6-4, 6-1.
