BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB women's soccer team won two games this past weekend at the College Challenge in Memphis, Tenn. The Blazers defeated Kentucky and tied the University of Miami (Ohio).
"I'm pleased with our first day of playing," said UAB head coach Paul Harbin. "The players executed a lot of the things we'd worked on in training. We still have some work to do, but I think we did a excellent job against two 2002 NCAA Tournament teams."
UAB beat the Wildcats, 1-0 on a goal by Jill Knottek, assisted by Liz Bosscher. Lisa Nowoslawski, who has completed her eligibility at UAB, played goalie for UAB and was credited with the shutout.
In their second game, the Blazers tied the Red Hawks, 1-1. Briana McCarty set up Jenny Rynders' goal, to make the score 1-0. Later, Miami tied the game with 10 minutes left in the match on a cross.
On March 9, UAB hosts the UAB In-State Challenge featuring seven teams. Auburn, Birmingham Southern, Jacksonville State and Samford are the collegiate teams participating.
Three non-collegiate teams are also participating, Alabama ODP (Olympic Development Program), Tennessee ODP and AFC Lightning (Georgia). Games will begin at 9 a.m. and continue through 4 p.m. on West Campus Field and the Football Practice Field in the UAB campus. The Blazers will play Alabama ODP at 9 a.m. and Auburn at 4 p.m. on West Campus Field and Jacksonville State at 11 a.m. and Birmingham Southern at 1 p.m. on the Football Practice field.
