Women's Tennis Beats Birmingham Southern, 5-2

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB women's tennis team (1-2) defeated the Panthers of Birmingham Southern (0-1), 5-2, here on Wednesday afternoon. The victory was the Blazers' first of the season.
"I'm glad to get the first win of the season," said head coach Mert Ertunga. "I'm very happy with our doubles play because we've been struggling in that area. Birmingham Southern has very good doubles teams, so it was good for us."
The Blazers took the doubles point by winning all three matches. UAB won, 8-5, at both the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. Blazers Femke de Boer and Natascha Immele defeated Charlotte Ann Kelly and Cammie Nix in the No. 1 match, while UAB's Nadia Dellarciprete and Ornischa Maier-Knapp beat Stephanie Ginsburg and Jessica Griffin of BSC. In the No. 3 match, Panthers Laura Kirk and Daisy Humphrey fell to UAB's Yvonne Ernst and Julia Hoch, 8-6.
In singles, the Blazers won at No. 1, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6. UAB defaulted at the No. 2 and No. 5 spots after the win had already been assured. Blazer Immele beat BSC's Griffin, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 1 spot. In the No. 3 match, UAB's Ernst defeated Ginsburg, 6-3, 7-6. Maier-Knapp of UAB notched a win over BSC's Jennifer Williams, 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 4 match. At the No. 6 spot, Dellaciprete defeated Kirk, 7-6, 6-0.
At the No. 2 spot, UAB's deBoer defaulted to Panther Kelly when deBoer was leading, 7-5, 2-3. UAB's Hoch was leading BSC's Humphrey, 6-4, 4-2, when Hoch defaulted the match.
UAB's next match is on Friday, Feb. 14 when it plays host to Murray State at Brook Highland Racquet Club.
