BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB women's tennis team improved to 2-2 on the season and 1-0 on C-USA play, after beating Southern Miss, 4-0, here on Wednesday afternoon. The victory was the Blazers' second straight win.
"This was the best beginning of a match that I've seen in quite some time," said UAB head coach Mert Ertunga. "Our players came out here and played 100 percent to start the match. We had great first sets in doubles and when you start like that, it makes it much easier to win."
The Blazers took the doubles point by winning at the No. 1 and No. 3 position. Natascha Immele and Ornischa Maier-Knapp of UAB won, 8-1, over Southern Miss' Nikhila Narra and Olivia Berry in the No. 1 match. Blazers Femke deBoer and Julia Hoch defeated USM's Amanda McClure and Courtney Ulrich, 8-1 in the No. 3 match. At the No. 2 spot, Nadia Dellarciprete and Yvonne Ernst of UAB were tied with Golden Eagles Kathi Sadofsky and Emily Foster, 6-6, when play was stopped after UAB had won the doubles point.
At No. 1 singles, UAB's deBoer defeated Southern Miss' Narra, 6-0, 7-5, in the first No. 1 singles match of her career. Immele of UAB beat Golden Eagle Sadofsky, 6-2, 6-1, in the No. 2 singles match, while USM's Berry fell to Blazer Ernst, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 4 position.
"I was very proud of Femke today," Ertunga said. "This was her first time at the No. 1 position and I think she played very well.
Play was halted in the other three singles matches after UAB was guaranteed the win. UAB's Maier-Knapp was leading Southern Miss' Foster, 1-0, in the third set of their match at No. 3 singles. In the No. 5 match, Blazer Dellarciprete was ahead of USM's McClure, 5-3, in the third set, while UAB's Hoch was beating Golden Eagle Ulrich, 7-6, the third set of their match at the No. 6 position.
UAB's next match is on Friday, February 21, at 9 a.m. when it plays host to Murray State at Brook Highland Racquet Club.
