BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- Junior transfer Donell Taylor scored 35 points, while three other players scored in double-figures to lead the Green team to a 102-89 victory over the Gold team at the annual Green versus Gold scrimmage game here Sunday. The two squads combined to have nine players score double digits and account for 24 steals.
"I think the first part of the scrimmage we played sloppy, but we came out in the second half with more intensity," said UAB head coach Mike Anderson. "We were able to score some points and that's what I want to see."
Donell Taylor finished the day 14-of-18 from the field and added eight rebounds and four steals. Senior Sidney Ball registered the game's only double-double, pouring in 20 points and collecting 11 rebounds for the Green side. Other performers for the Green team included junior transfer Marques Lewis who had 15 points and seven boards and sophomore transfer Carldell Johnson recorded 10 points and a game-high six steals.
Senior Mo Finley led the Gold side with 23 points and was one of five Gold players to score double figures. Demario Eddins has 15 points and five assists, Ronell Taylor scored 14 points and added a game-best seven assists, while Gabe Kennedy and Richard Jones each collected 12 points and four boards.
"I really like this team right now," continued Anderson. "I think we have a lot more depth and for our style of play, you have to have depth. I think we were able to do some good things and we can build from that."
The Blazers will next open the exhibition season when they play host to VASDA USA on Thursday, Nov. 6, at 7:30 p.m.
