BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB men's basketball team will open the 2003-04 campaign with the annual Green and Gold scrimmage at Bartow Arena. The two teams were chosen here Wednesday in a draft by the honorary coaches Matt Coulter and Jim Dunaway, along with the assistance of the UAB coaching staff.
Dunaway, sports director at NBC 13, will be the honorary coach of the Green team. Assistant coach Scott Edgar and Team Coordinator T.J. Cleveland will also be coaching the Green squad. Coulter, the Blazers color analyst and morning talk show host on WJOX 690-AM, will be the honorary coach of the Gold Team. Assistant coaches Chris Giles and Matt Zimmerman will also be coaching on the Gold side.
"This gives our guys an actual game-setting with officials and fans," UAB head coach Mike Anderson said. "This is going to be a fun game and the only winners are going to be the Blazers. It gives the guys a break from the rigors of practice and gives them a game-type atmosphere. It is going to be the first public showing for the UAB basketball team and it will be fun for all involved."
The Green team will consist of Carldell Johnson, Marques Lewis, Sidney Ball, Tony Johnson, Donell Taylor, Derrick Broom, Ernest Little and Reed Davis. The Gold team will have Morris Finley, Gabe Kennedy, Brandon Tobias, Demario Eddins, Ronell Taylor, Richard Jones, Lee Cobb and DeAndre' Carroll.
The game, which is free to the public, will be a live game with officials and game-type atmosphere.
The Green and Gold game is set for Sunday, November 2, at 3 p.m. in Bartow Arena. The Blazers will open the campaign when they play host to VASDA on Thursday, November 6, at 7:30 p.m.
