BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB men's basketball team will conclude its two-game Conference USA homestand when it faces National Division rival Southern Miss on Saturday, January 18, at 7 p.m. in Bartow Arena. Both teams enter the contest in first place in the National Division with a 2-1 conference record.
UAB (10-4, 2-1) is coming off a disappointing 78-58 loss to Charlotte on Tuesday in Bartow Arena. Charlotte's Demon Brown lit up the arena, scoring 32 points and connecting on 9-of-17 three-pointers on the night - one three pointer away from tying a single-game C-USA record. The Blazers were down three points, 48-45, with 12:11 left in the game, but Brown hit three 3-pointers to spark an 18-2 Charlotte run to lift the 49ers to a 66-47 lead and secure the win. Jeff Collins led the Blazers with 16 points on the night.
The Golden Eagles of Southern Miss (9-5, 2-1) enter Saturday's game on a recent hot streak, winning four of their last six contests. The Golden Eagles are led by Charles Gaines who is averaging 14.6 points and 10.0 rebounds per contest. Junior Greg Johnson and freshman Jasper Johnson also average double-figure scoring, with 13.1 and 10.5 points per contest, respectively. Jasper Johnson is the reigning C-USA player of the week for leading USM to victories over TCU and Memphis.
Saturday's game marks the 19th time the two teams have met, with UAB holding an 11-7 advantage in the series. USM has taken three of the last five meetings; however, the Blazers won the last meeting, 66-56, in Bartow Arena on Feb. 26, 2002.
