BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America) has recognized three UAB women's soccer players for their achievements in the 2002 season.
Forward Tara Kidwell was named to the 2002 NSCAA/adidas Women's NCAA Division I All-South third team. Kidwell was the second-leading scorer for the Blazers this year, but led the team in points with 29. Kidwell scored 10 goals to go along with her nine assists. Kidwell also made her name known in the conference stats, as she tied for 2nd in points, 4th in goals, tied for 4th in assists, and tied for 5th in game-winning goals.
"It is wonderful to see that Tara is being recognized by our opponents as being one of the top players in the region," said UAB head coach Paul Harbin. "I am very proud of her and the effort that she has put forth helping our team to succeed."
The Blazers also had two players named to the 2002 NSCAA/adidas Women's College Scholar All-South team. Goalie Lisa Nowoslawski was named to the first team, while midfielder Cindy Penaranda made third team.
"As usual, I am excited that Lisa and Cindy are continuing the tradition of being stellar examples of the true student-athlete," said Harbin.
Nowoslawski, a Biology major with a 4.0 GPA, has ended her career at UAB, but not before putting her name all over the Blazer record book. Nowoslawski is UAB's season leader in most saves (103 in 2001), highest save percentage (.824 in 2001), most saves per game (5.15 in 2001), least goals allowed (22 in 2001 and 1999), and best goals allowed average (1.13 in 2001). She's also the Blazers' career leader in most saves (327), most minutes played (5,836) and most wins (29).
Penaranda is majoring in Broadcasting and has 3.35 GPA. She completed her eligibility this season, finishing with three goals, five assists and 13 points in her career as a midfielder. Penaranda started 55 matches and played in 76 for UAB in her four years with the program.
