The UAB women's soccer team (1-0-1) begins its home season Thursday, September 5th, against Southeastern Conference foe Vanderbilt. The game will be played at 7 p.m. at the West Campus field.
The Blazers return to action following a successful trip to Hawaii last weekend. UAB won the OHANA Hotels & Resort No Ka Oi Tournament hosted by the University of Hawaii. The Blazers went 1-0-1 in the tournament to capture the title. On Friday, UAB tied host Hawaii, 1-1, after battling through two overtime periods. Sophomore Jenny Rynders deflected Briana McCarty's free kick from 45 yards into the net for the Blazers goal. On Saturday, UAB defeated the Cowgirls of Wyoming, 3-0. Goalie Lisa Nowoslawski had nine saves in the Blazers' first victory of the season.
Offensively, UAB got many players involved in the attack. Tara Kidwell scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Jill Knottek. In the second half, UAB came out aggressively, with Jenny Rynders scoring her second goal of the season, while the third and final goal of the game came an unassisted shot from Jill Knottek. The Blazers also dominated the post-tournament awards. Nowoslawski was named tournament MVP for her stellar work in goal, as she allowed one goal in 200 minutes of play. In addition, Kidwell, McCarty, Rynders and Knottek were named to the all-tournament team.
Vanderbilt comes to Birmingham after losing to Saint Louis in overtime, 1-0, in its season-opener.
