BIRMINGHAM, Ala.-----UAB will meet Tennessee in both team's first exhibition game of the season in Huntsville, Ala. at 8 p.m. Friday in the Alabama Shootout. The Shootout will consist of six games featuring eleven teams, including Alabama A&M, Auburn, North Alabama, Tennessee, UAB, and UAH. The games will be played at John Hunt Park Soccer Complex.
"Tennessee is an excellent team and one of the top 15 teams in the country," said UAB head coach Paul Harbin. "It will be a good test to tell us exactly where we stand."
The UAB squad features twenty-three players, including nine returning starters and twenty letterwinners from the 2001 season. Defender Briana McCarty (Lawrenceville, Ga.) returns for her sophomore season. McCarty was chosen to the preseason all-league team in Conference USA.
"We feel like this team is ahead of where it has been the last couple of years at this point." Harbin added. "We have a good understanding of what we are trying to do because we have so many returning players."
UAB will take on the Clemson in another exhibition game Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. in Atlanta.
"Clemson is a top-10 team and they have been consistently in the top 10 the last couple of years," said Harbin. "The match will be a good challenge for us."
