BIRMINGHAM, Ala. UAB men's basketball coach Mike Anderson completed his first recruiting class as the Blazers' head coach with the signing of 6-foot-7 forward Brandon Tobias of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. to a basketball scholarship.
Tobias led Dillard High School to three straight 6A state championships. This season he averaged 15 points, 12 rebounds and 3 blocked shots as Dillard compiled a 24-9 record. Dillard became only the third school in state history to win three straight state championships.
Last summer Tobias averaged 17 points and 12 rebounds playing with the Coast-To-Coast AAU team.
He originally signed with Arkansas in the early signing period last November but was granted his release from his national letter of intent.
"Brandon is a tremendous athlete and plays like a warrior. I am ecstatic to add Brandon to our recruiting class and to have him as a part of our program," Anderson said. "He is an outstanding rebounder and I am delighted to get a player of his caliber. When we signed him at Arkansas last November, he was one of the first players in our recruiting class who had already qualified academically."
Tobias is the fifth player in this year's recruiting class. UAB signed 6-foot-9 Gabe Kennedy of Bevill State-Walker Junior College, 6-7 forward DeMario Eddins of Winchendon Prep School in Massachusetts and 6-4 guard Richard Jones of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, during the spring period. Derrick Broom, a 6-5 wing player, signed with the school in the early signing period in November.
