Eight Players Commit to Women's Soccer for 2002 Season

BIRMINGHAM -Eight players have committed to the UAB women's soccer team for the upcoming 2002 season.
"I'm definitely excited about this class," said head coach Paul Harbin. "In addition to their particular individual talents, all eight of these players share two common traits. They are all very athletic and they all have a tremendous blue collar work ethic."
Liz Bosscher , a midfielder from Louisville, Kentucky is a transfer from the United States Air Force Academy where she was named Rookie of the Year following her freshman season. Bosscher was a three-time Kentucky All-State player at Sacred Heart Academy where she served as team captain for two years. In 1999 she was named the Kentucky Eurosport Player of the Year. Bosscher was named All-Region Player in 2000 and is the daughter of James and Ilene Bosscher.
"The fact that Liz was named Rookie of the Year for a very talented Air Force Academy team lets me know that she has what it takes to succeed at this level. She's a quick, gritty outside midfielder who loves to go 1-on-1 and has the ability to serve great driven balls into the box. Her skill and experience should add a positive dimension to our team in the fall."
Kacie Deon is a defender from Greer, SC and attends Riverside High School. Deon earned High School All-Region honors for three consecutive years and was named to the Viking Tournament All-Tournament Team for three consecutive years as well. Kacie plays club soccer for the State Champion Greenville Football Club. Deon is the daughter of Kenneth and Karen Deon.
"Kacie is a strong, fast, physical defender who likes to get forward into the attack."
Rebecca Garcia is a defender from Tulsa, Oklahoma where she attends Jenks High School. Garcia was a three-time 5A State Champion at Jenks and was named to the All-Conference team during the 2001 season. She is also a member of the State Champion and U.S. Regional finalist Tulsa Soccer Club and a member of the Oklahoma Olympic Development team. Garcia also lettered in volleyball at Jenks. She is the daughter of Alfonso and Cynthia Garcia.
"Becky is a smooth, skillful, athletic defender who reads the game very well."
Laura Skridulis is a defender from Huntsville, Alabama where she has played four years on the varsity soccer team at Bob Jones High School. She has been a member of the Alabama Olympic Development team since 1999. At Bob Jones, Skridulis was a three -time All-Metro Team selection, two-time All-State Team selection and earned the Best Defensive Award for three consecutive years. In club, she plays for the Alabama State Champion Rocket City Kicks. Skridulis was selected to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America South Region Academic All-America Team. She is the daughter of Rosemary Skridulis and David Skridulis.
"Laura is one of the best players coming out of the state of Alabama this year. With her athleticism and versatility, she has the ability to play in a number of different positions for us in the fall."
Leslie Marcouiller is a midfielder/forward who hails from Marietta, Georgia where she attends Sprayberry High School. During Leslie's high school career, Sprayberry was the 2001 6AAAA State Quarter-Finalist, Sub-Region Champion in 1999 and a Runner-Up in 2000 and 2001. Marcouiller was twice selected Most Valuable Offensive Player at Sprayberry where she was the team's leading scorer for three consecutive years. She has been a three-time Atlanta Journal All-County selection and was twice named to the Marietta Daily Journal All-County Team. She has been a member of the State Champion Tophat Soccer Club since 1998 and the Georgia Olympic Development Program since 1999. Leslie is the daughter of Patrick and Patrice Marcouiller and has a twin sister, Emily, who will attend UNLV in the fall.
"Leslie is the prototypical flank midfielder with the ability to exploit space with her speed and physical determination."
Kellyn Robertson is a goalkeeper who comes to UAB from Tuscaloosa, Alabama. She is a transfer from Shelton State Community College in Tuscaloosa, Ala. During the 2001-02 season, she served as Shelton State's team's captain and also earned the Coaches Award. She was a four-year letter winner at Hillcrest High School playing midfield. At Hillcrest, Robertson was a two-year captain and was named Most Valuable Midfielder. She was captain of the West Alabama Soccer Association Lady Falcons. Robertson is the daughter of Tim and Lynn Robertson.
"Kellyn had two great years playing in goal for Shelton State. We are hoping that she will continue that tradition here at UAB."
Leigh Burton is midfielder from Dothan, Alabama where she attends Northview High School. During her senior year at Northview, she received the Optimist Club Outstanding Female Student Award, the WTVY Channel 4 Scholar Athlete Award, and the All-America Scholar Award, and is a nominee for the Wendy's High School Heisman Award. As a junior at Northview, Burton was named Most Valuable Midfielder. She plays club soccer for the Lady Shockers Soccer Club. Burton also lettered in basketball and softball at Northview. She was named All Area in basketball following her senior season and was named to the Dothan Eagle Super 12 team in both sports. She is in the National Honor Society and is the chairman of the Building Committee for Habitat for Humanity. Burton is the daughter of John and Laura Burton.
"Leigh is a skillful, composed, athletic central midfielder who consistently makes her presence known on the field."
Celine Chenoweth , a midfielder from Birmingham and a transfer from The Master's College in Santa Clarita, Calif. Chenoweth was a two-time NCCAA All-Region player in her three years as a Mustang. She served as the team captain during her junior year at Master's and earned the MVP award as a sophomore. Chenoweth was three-time State Champion at Briarwood Christian High School where she was named offensive MVP following her senior season. She played club soccer for and was a founding member of the State Champion Attack Soccer Club and was a five-year member of the Alabama Olympic Development Program. While playing for the Attack, Celine was the backbone of a team that produced an unprecedented 6 players who have played in the U.S. National Team Program.
"I had the pleasure of coaching Celine on the State Team prior to her initial college enrollment. She was one of those players who came to training every day excited and ready to learn. That quality, along with her skill and work ethic, is undoubtedly what led to her being named Captain and MVP at Master's. I look forward to the mature experience that she will bring to our young team."
