Synchronized Swimming Advances Two Teams To Finals At Collegiate Championships

NORTON, Mass. - UAB advanced two teams to Saturday's final round at the U.S. Collegiate Synchronized Swimming Championships held at Balfour Natatorium on the campus of Wheaton College.
The UAB team of Jessica Brown, Kelli Dickerson, Amanda Haeuser, Jennifer Holmquist, Stacey Jackson, Stephanie Jackson, Stacy Leiker and Bogdana Zareva grabbed a third place finish, with a score of 93.500 in the semifinal round. The UAB team of Luna Aguilu, Hannah Freer, Kristen Kramer, Erica Levine, Kara Morgan, Sarah Pikal and Moraine Ruddick took sixth, scoring an 86.917. Both teams will compete for a national crown in the team event tomorrow.
Two Blazers placed two swimmers in the top 10 in the figure competition. Zareva finished second, scoring an 84.057 and Brown took eighth, with a score of 82.159.
UAB will compete for a national title in all four events in tomorrow's final round. Zareva will compete in the solo finals and will compete in the duet finals with Haeuser. Holmquist and Leiker will also compete in the duet finals and the duo will team with Aguilu to compete in the trio finals.
More than 200 athletes from 22 universities are competing for collegiate national titles in the solo, duet, trio and team events. The championships are an open-class meet, combining competition for NCAA Divisions I, II and III, plus NAIA schools. The Ohio State University is attempting to win its third consecutive, and 22nd overall title in the 26th year of the championships. Top athletes advance to the U.S. National Championships and 2002 U.S. National Team Trials, April 18-20 at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
The top eight entries from preliminary rounds advance to Saturday's finals. Competition continues Saturday at 10:20 a.m. (ET) with finals in all events.
