AUBURN, Ala. - A school-record nine pitchers combined for a no-hitter as Auburn defeated UAB, 9-2, at Hitchcock Field at Plainsman Park, Tuesday evening.
Freshman Sean Gamble hit a three-run home run and Javon Moran extended his career-best hitting streak to 12 games as Auburn improved to 18-5.
UAB dropped to 8-12 overall.
A total of 15 pitchers were used between the two teams.
The Tigers' pitching staff held UAB to one base runner until one out in the ninth, when UAB managed to score two runs on a pair of walks and three consecutive Auburn errors. The only Blazer base runner prior to the ninth was Eric Lyon, who was hit by pitch to lead off the second inning.
The nine pitchers used were an Auburn record and tied for the fourth-most ever in a NCAA Division I game. Butler used 13 pitchers in a game against Indiana-Southeast on May 5, 1998.
Auburn junior Mike Mueller went two innings in the start, and was followed by six pitchers -- Lee Carter, Brandon Channell, Reid Price, Andrew Skinner, Arnold Hughey, and Ken Clayton -- each of whom pitched one inning.
Cory Dueitt went 2/3 of an inning in the ninth before Sean Jones went the final 1/3 of an inning.
Carter (1-0) picked up his first career win, after pitching a perfect third inning.
UAB starter Ryan Huffman (1-2) was credited with the loss after allowing two runs on three hits with two walks and a strikeout in three innings of work. Five Blazers saw action in relief.
Auburn scored a run in the second and third innings and Gamble's three-run homer in the fourth gave the Tigers a 5-0 advantage. Auburn added a run in the fifth and three in the eighth.
UAB will be in action again this weekend traveling to Charlotte, N.C., for a three-game Confernence USA series with the Charlotte 49ers.
