Peters and Nowoslawski Earn Verizon Academic All-America Award

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Add one more accolade to the list of UAB women's soccer players, Denise Peters and Lisa Nowoslawski. Both have been selected to the the 2002 Verizon Academic All-America All-District IV First Team University Division Women's Soccer Team, unveiled Thursday.
To qualify, student-athletes must hold sophomore status, have a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.2, and be either a starter or key reserve for their team.
A senior midfielder from Jacksonville, Ala., Peters is a four-year letterwinner for the Blazers and has maintained a 3.85 GPA in psychology.
Peters has accumulated numerous academic awards in her fouryears at UAB. She has been on the Conference USA honor roll (min. 3.0 GPA) three consecutive years, earned two C-USA Academic Medals of Honor (awarded to student-athletes with a GPA of 3.75 or higher) and has been a fixture on the Athletic Director's honor roll. Peters has earned Presidential honor on several occasions and has been named to the Dean's List and President's List as well as being in several honor societies.
Earlier this year, Peters was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Women's Scholar All-America Third Team.
Peters has also earned many athletic awards in her tenure. During the 2001 season, Peters was named First Team All-Conference after leading UAB during the regular season in goals with eight. She completed the year with nine total goals, giving her 24 for her career and ranking her third on the UAB career goals list. Recently, she was named to Soccer Buzz's Central Region Third Team.
Nowoslawski, a junior goalkeeper from Melbourne, Fla., has a 4.0 GPA in biology. She has been awarded the C-USA Academic medal and been named to the Athletic Director's honor roll two consecutive years. She has earned Presidential honors every quarter since beginning UAB.
During the season, Nowoslawski started all 20 games for the Blazers, earning a 1.13 goals against average and .824 save percentage. She earned six shutouts, sharing two of them with junior keeper Janet Lemke. In three years, she has topped many of UAB's goalkeeping individual and career records.
Both players will move to the national ballot for the Verizon Academic All-America Women's Soccer Team, which will be announced Feb. 5.
