BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - A trip to the Virgin Islands, a return to the Arby's Hardwood Classic and 14 regular-season home games at Bartow Arena highlight the 2001-02 UAB men's basketball schedule released today by head coach Murry Bartow.
The Blazers open the regular season with three games at the Paradise Jam in St. Thomas. UAB plays Eastern Michigan (Nov. 17) and the University of Miami (Nov. 19), before a date with either Clemson, LaSalle or Morris Brown in its final tournament tilt on Nov 20.
The home portion of the ledger then starts with back-to-back non-conference contests against last season NIT participants Richmond (Nov. 24) and Bradley (Nov. 27). The Richmond game is part of the UAB Classic that features a doubleheader with the Lady Blazers - who play against Wake Forest.
"It's always been good for us to schedule tough non-conference games at home," Bartow said. "We play a talented Bradley squad out of the Missouri Valley and Richmond out of the Atlantic 10 - both teams that have great basketball tradition and have experienced much success in their histories. Factor in Louisiana Tech, a team that is slated to be a force in the WAC, and UNLV at home, along with LaSalle, Murray State and Virginia Commonwealth on the road, and this makes for a challenging set of games to prepare us for league play."
The UNLV game will be the first game of the Hardwood Classic doubleheader at the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center, Dec. 8, as Auburn hosts Virginia in the other matchup.
The Blazers open Conference USA action against the league's newest coach, Rick Pitino, and the Louisville Cardinals at Bartow Arena, Jan. 5, in front on an ESPN television audience.
Both league newcomers, East Carolina and TCU, will make an appearance in Birmingham. The Billy Tubbs' led Horned Frogs come to the Arena Feb. 12, while East Carolina has a Jan. 8 playing date.
The other five National Division games in addition to TCU at home include Houston (Jan. 19), Tulane (Jan. 26), Memphis (Feb. 8), South Florida (Feb. 23) and Southern Miss (Feb. 26). The Blazers return visits to each of those schools, as well as traveling to American Division opponents Marquette (Jan. 15) and Saint Louis (Feb. 19).
The top 12 finishers during the league's regular season will reach the C-USA Tournament that is scheduled for Cincinnati, Ohio, Mar. 6-9.
