BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB men's basketball player Will Campbell underwent successful surgery Monday morning to repair a tear of his radial collateral ligament in his right thumb. The injury was sustained in a pickup game June 27 with teammates.
"The procedure went very well and our intent is to have Will in a protective splint for the next couple of months," said orthopedic surgeon and head team physician Dr. Bill Garth Monday afternoon.
Garth assisted Dr. Ekkehard Bonatz who performed the operation in just under an hour at the UAB Hospital.
The news came as a good news to men's basketball coach Murry Bartow who was on the road recruiting.
"From what the doctors have said, the surgery was termed a success," Bartow said. "We are delighted with the outcome of the procedure as we look toward the season in which Will is a big part of our plans."
The rising senior from Elmira, N.Y. scored 8.7 points per game last season and added a team-best 8.1 rebounds in his first campaign with the Blazers. Campbell transferred from Chipola (Fla.) Junior College to the UAB campus prior to last season.
