BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB basketball player Will Campbell (Elmira, N.Y.) will have surgery Monday to repair damage sustained to his right thumb June 27 in a pickup game with teammates on campus.
"Will and his teammates were playing a pickup game and he hit his thumb on the backboard," UAB coach Murry Bartow said. "It was just an unfortunate development to his preparation for next season."
The 6-foot-8 interior player for the Blazers tallied 8.7 points and a team-best 8.1 rebounds for UAB last season. He also collected a club-best eight double-doubles and ranked fifth in Conference USA in rebounding. It was his first season with UAB after transferring from Chipola Junior College in Florida. Campbell will be a senior for the 2001-02 campaign.
The surgical procedure will be performed by Dr. Ekkehard Bonatz at the UAB Hospital.
