Jacksonville State Sweeps Doubleheader From UAB Softball

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - Jacksonville State (24-25, 9-5 Trans America Athletic Conference) swept both games of a doubleheader from UAB (22-31, 6-9 Conference USA) in softball action at University Field. The Gamecocks won the first game 3-0 and took the second contest 6-0.
Jacksonville State got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning in game one. Designated player Meghan Maskel's sacrifice fly to center field scored catcher Lauren Buck to put the Gamecocks up 1-0.
The Gamecocks added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. With the bases loaded, Buck grounded out to second base, allowing left fielder Cindy Mackin to score.
Jacksonville State went up 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning when Mackin's sacrifice fly to left field scored Carter.
Jill Wilcoxson (12-12) went the distance for the Gamecocks and got the win. Wilcoxson worked seven innings, allowed no runs on two hits, walked one and struck out four.
Kerri Foster (11-13) had a complete game for UAB and picked up the loss. Foster pitched six innings, gave up three runs on nine hits, walked none and struck out two.
Jacksonville State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning in game two. With two outs, third baseman Allie Simons doubled to left field, driving in shortstop Rachel Countryman, Mackin and right fielder Stacey Smith.
The Gamecocks added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Countryman singled to left field, scoring second baseman Tina Hill. Maskel then hit her second sacrifice fly of the game to left field, scoring Buck. Mackin followed with a single to right field that brought in Countryman.
Meadow McWhorter (8-7) had a complete game victory for Jacksonville State, working seven innings, allowing five hits, one walk and striking out two.
Kelli Thompson (9-15) also had a complete game for UAB and got the loss. Thompson, pitched six innings, allowed six runs on nine hits, walked one and struck out four.
UAB returns home Saturday to George Ward Park for the final home series of the season. The Blazers face Conference USA rival Charlotte (15-26, 1-14 C-USA) in a doubleheader Saturday, starting at 1 p.m. The teams square off again Sunday in a single game, also at 1 p.m.
