UAB Softball Splits Conference USA Doubleheader With South Florida

TAMPA, Fla. - UAB (18-21, 2-3 Conference USA) split a doubleheader with South Florida (29-19, 3-2 C-USA) in Conference USA softball action at the USF Softball Complex, dropping the first game 1-0 and winning the second 1-0.
In the first game, center fielder Stephanie Roberts broke up Kerri Foster's no-hitter in the bottom of the sixth inning with a base hit to the right side. Roberts then advanced to second on a passed ball by Amanda Ellis. Shortstop Renee Oursler followed with a walk. Third baseman Courtney Lewellen then delivered the game-winning hit to the right side, allowing Roberts to score.
Jessica Kowal (17-6) went the distance for the Bulls and picked up the win, allowing two hits, two walks and striking out seven. Foster (8-9) had a complete game for UAB, also throwing a two-hitter with three walks and five strikeouts.
UAB's lone run in the second game came in the top of the fifth inning when shortstop Candice Hithe reached second on an error by third baseman Ginny Georgantas, allowing designated player Foster to score.
Kelli Thompson (8-10) pitched five and two-thirds innings for UAB, allowing six hits, no walks and striking out three. Foster came on in relief in the sixth inning and recorded her second save of the year. Foster went one and one-third innings for UAB, walked one and struck out two.
Jamie Peterka (4-8) had a complete game for South Florida and picked up the loss. She allowed one run, which was unearned, on four hits, walked one and struck out six.
UAB and South Florida will square off in the third and final game of the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. (ET).
