UAB Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Southern Miss

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB softball team (17-17, 1-1 Conference USA) split a Conference USA doubleheader against Southern Miss (21-12, C-USA), losing the first game 10-0 and winning the second 4-2.
Felicia Gonzales (11-5) threw a no-hitter in the first game for Southern Miss, pitching five innings, striking out 10 and walking one. Kelli Thompson (7-9) picked up the loss for UAB, going four innings and giving up seven hits and five runs. Thompson recorded three strikeouts. Mandie Wyatt pitched one inning in relief, allowing five runs on two hits and striking out one. The game was called in the fifth inning due to softball's eight-run-rule.
In game two, Southern Miss got on top in the top of the first inning with a lead off home run by left fielder Amanda Brown.
UAB answered with two runs in the bottom of the first on a two-run homer to left field by right fielder Cliffanie Engram.
UAB added two more runs in the bottom of the third when Engram doubled down the right field line, allowing catcher Carrie Parker and left fielder Jessica Brown to score.
Southern Miss got one more run in the top of the fourth on a solo home run to center field by catcher Kenya Peters.
Kerri Foster (8-6) had the complete game victory for UAB, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out seven.
UAB and Southern Miss will play the final game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m. at George Ward Park Field No. 6.
