UAB Softball Falls To Southern Miss 6-1

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB (17-18, 1-2 Conference USA) fell to Southern Miss (22-12, 2-1 C-USA) 6-1 in Conference USA softball action at George Ward Park Field No. 6.
Southern Miss got on top in the first inning on a double to left center by third baseman Melanie Hymel, which allowed left fielder Amanda Brown to score.
Southern Miss added a run in the top of the fourth inning when second baseman Melanie McMains singled through the left side, scoring shortstop Channika Gant.
Southern Miss got two more runs in the top of the fifth on a two-run home run to left field by first baseman Tammy Edwards.
UAB's lone run came in the bottom of the fifth on a single to center field by pinch hitter Beth Mullins, which allowed third baseman Lucy Bass to score.
The Golden Eagles' final two runs came in the top of the seventh inning on a two-run homer to center field by catcher Kenya Peters.
Felicia Gonzales (12-5) had a complete game victory for Southern Miss, allowing one run on three hits and striking out 13. Kerri Foster (8-7) tossed a complete game and picked up the loss for UAB. Foster allowed six runs on six hits and struck out 10.
The Golden Eagles took the overall weekend series, winning two out of three games. Southern Miss won the first game of a doubleheader Saturday 10-0 and UAB took the second contest 4-2
UAB returns home to George Ward Park Tuesday to take on Georgia State in a doubleheader, starting at 4 p.m. Admission is free.
