BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Georgia State (26-14, 2-2 Trans America Athletic Conference) swept UAB (17-20, 1-2 Conference USA) in a softball doubleheader at George Ward Park this evening, winning game one 3-0 and taking the second contest 3-1.
In the first game, Georgia State got on top in the top of the first inning. Left fielder Cindy Gillies reached on an error by second baseman Adrienne Guilbeau. Shortstop Corrie Roberts then singled through the left side, scoring Gillies.
Georgia State got another run in the top of the fourth inning on a lead-off solo home run to left field by Roberts.
Georgia State added its final run in the top of the fifth when Roberts reached on an error by Guilbeau.
Andrea McNary (13-2) had a complete game for the Lady Panthers, allowing only three hits, walking none and striking out five. Kelli Thompson (7-10) went the whole way for the Blazers and picked up the loss. Thompson gave up eight hits, one earned run, two walks and struck out three.
In the second contest, Georgia State went ahead in the top of the second inning. Second baseman Katie Blue reached on an error left fielder Emily Scarbrough to begin the inning. Blue then advanced to second on a wild pitch by Kerri Foster. She proceeded to third on a passed ball by Carrie Parker. First baseman Kortney Dempsey then hit a sacrifice fly to to left field, scoring Blue.
In the top of the third inning with two outs, Roberts reached on an error by second baseman Amber Rouse, allowing third baseman Missy Hall to score.
Georgia State's final run came in the top of the fourth inning as Hall reached second on an error by third baseman Lucy Bass, which scored catcher Shannon McCormick.
UAB got one run in the bottom of the seventh. Left fielder Jessica Brown led off the inning with a triple to center field. Thompson, pinch hitting for Rouse, grounded out to second base, allowing Brown to score.
Angela Buckem (9-9) had a complete game victory for Georgia State. Buckem allowed one run on three hits, walked two and struck out three. Foster (8-8) went the distance for the Blazers and got the loss. Foster allowed three hits, three runs, none of which were earned, walked three and struck out nine.
UAB next travels to Tampa, Fla. to take on C-USA rival South Florida (28-18, 2-1 C-USA) in a three game series over the weekend. The Blazers play a doubleheader against the Bulls Saturday, starting at 1 p.m. (ET) and then play a single game Sunday at 1 p.m. (ET).
