UAB Softball Falls To South Florida

CLEARWATER, Fla.--South Florida shortstop Renee Ourster's grand slam home run in the bottom of the sixth inning gave the top-seeded Bulls a 5-3 victory over UAB Saturday at the USF/Clearwater Parks & Recreation Tournament. The loss eliminated UAB (16-16) from the tournament.
UAB broke on top 1-0 in the top of the first inning as designated player Luci Bass doubled home right fielder Cliffanie Engram.
South Florida tied the game at 1-1 in the second inning on an RBI single by second baseman Cindy Turek that scored Ourster. UAB took a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning as shortstop Candace Hithe drove in two runs with a single.
In the bottom of the sixth, South Florida loaded the bases and took the lead for good as Ourster homered off UAB starter Kelli Thompson.
South Florida starter Jessi Kowal(14-6) finished her complete game victory by retiring UAB in order in the top of the seventh. Kowal allowed three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.
Thompson (7-8) also pitched a complete game, allowing five runs on six hits.
UAB will be in action again next weekend, beginning Conference USA play with a three-game series vs. Southern Miss at George Ward Park.
