Troy State Sweeps UAB In Season Opener

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.... Troy State (2-0) swept a doubleheader against UAB (0-2) in softball action this afternoon at George Ward Park, defeating the Blazers 1-0 in the first game and 3-1 in game two.
The first contest saw a scoreless tie through six innings of play. In the top of the seventh with two outs, Bridget McInnes of Troy State singled up the middle and then advanced to second on a passed ball by Amanda Ellis. Mindy Porep then singled and brought in the game winning RBI. Kim Unkenholz (1-0) picked up the win for the Lady Trojans and Megan Stephenson got the loss for the Blazers.
In the second game, the Lady Trojans went up 1-0 in the third inning as Kami Marrott doubled and then advanced to third on Molly Homer's sacrifice bunt. McInnes singled up the middle, driving in Marrott.
The Blazers answered in the fifth as Jessica Brown singled to left, driving in Beth Mullins.
Troy State retook the lead in the sixth as Irene Mitchell singled to right and then advanced to second on a passed ball by Ellis. Erica Cruzat then reached on an error by Ellis, scoring Mitchell.
Troy State added their final run in the seventh as Homer doubled to right center and then advanced to third on a fielder's choice. Porep then singled, scoring Homer.
Cassie Wilkenson (1-0) was the winning pitcher for the Trojans and Kerri Foster picked up the loss for UAB.
UAB next travels to Athens, Ga. to take on the University of Georgia Thursday at 3 p.m.
