Athens, Ga. - The UAB softball team split a doubleheader Thursday, losing game one, 1-0, and winning the night cap, 5-1, in nine innings. Georgia is 6-6 on the season and UAB improves to 1-3.
Kaili Howard pitched her second complete-game, 1-0 shutout in game one. The freshman fanned four UAB batters while scattering four hits. UAB's Kelli Thompson was just as effective, throwing six innings of four-hit ball. But Thompson delivered a first-pitch, RBI single to Kristen Bell in the bottom of the first that scored Julie Milner to give the Dogs the only run of the contest.
The Blazers' lone threat came in the fourth when they pieced together two singles, but Howard left both runners stranded.
Game two gave UAB its first-ever win over the Bulldogs, and handed Georgia its second-straight loss in an extra-inning game. Both teams went into the extra frames tied at zero, and after eight the score was knotted at 1-1. In Georgia's half of the eighth, the Dogs had runners on second and third with no outs and could only plate one run on a Kerri Foster wild pitch. Two Bulldog fielder's choices resulted in outs at home and Kristen Bell ended the inning with a strikeout.
Kendra Daniels pitched all nine innings for Georgia, and in the top of the ninth the Blazers capitalized on two triples from Cliffanie Engram and Amanda Ellis to pull away with the win.
Kerri Foster had a complete game for the Blazers, allowing only three hits and recording seven strikeouts.
Tomorrow starts the first annual Georgia Bulldog Softball Classic, with games beginning at 10 a.m. and ending with a 6 p.m. contest. The Blazers face Marshall at 10 a.m. and Charleston Southern at 2 p.m.
