NEW ORLEANS, La. - The UAB women's soccer team broke a five-game winning streak as they fell 3-0 to Tulane in Conference USA action Sunday afternoon.
With the loss, UAB drops to 7-7 overall and 5-3 in C-USA play. The Green Wave, posting its third straight C-USA shutout, improved to 7-6 overall and 5-3 in C-USA.
The two teams battled through a scoreless first half that saw end-to-end action, but few chances on goal, as Tulane held a slight 3-1 edge in shots at the break. The Green Wave wasted little time in taking the lead in the second half, however, scoring what would prove to be the game-winner just five minutes into the second frame.
Tulane's Brooke Parker played a ball through the back-line of the UAB defense for Mandy Schumacher, who had timed her run perfectly. Schumacher's one-touch cross found Lindsay Morris and the freshman fought off a Blazer defender to notch her team-leading sixth goal of the season from the top of the six-yard box.
Tulane added a second goal just 11 minutes later. Colleen Lake fed Tracey Powers along the left flank and Powers cut inside a UAB defender before blasting a right-footed shot that beat UAB goalkeeper Lisa Nowoslawski (Melbourne, Fla.) to the near post in the 62nd minute to give the Wave a 2-0 lead.
Parker added a goal of her own to close out the scoring in the 72nd minute. Stephanie Donaldson began the play near midfield with a pass to Kelley Smith, who sent a ball down the right flank for Parker. Parker outran the UAB defense, took a touch and slotted the ball past a diving Nowoslawki to give Tulane a 3-0 advantage.
Tulane held an 11-6 edge in shots for the game and forced five saves from Nowoslawski. The three goals were the most given up by UAB in a game this season.
UAB returns to action Tuesday night as the Blazers travel to Nashville to face Vanderbilt in non-conference play. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
