Former UAB golfer Thomas Sutton joined the men’s golf team in January of 2016 as the program’s assistant coach. The Montgomery, Ala., native spent five seasons as a Blazer from 2009-14. After sitting out the 2009-10 season as a redshirt freshman, Sutton spent the next four seasons as a fixture on the UAB roster as he competed in 47 events during his career.
His collegiate resume includes appearances in the 2012 Stanford Regional where he tied for 10th overall and led UAB to the NCAA Championships, 2013 Baton Rouge Regional (T-17) and 2014 Sugar Grove Regional (T-42) and NCAA Championships. He helped lead the Blazers to a second-place finish in the Conference USA Championships his senior year – the program’s best C-USA Tournament finish since taking home gold in 2008.
In his first season as an assistant coach, Sutton helped guide the Blazers to a third straight appearance in the NCAA Championships. The Blazers earned their way to Eugene, Ore., by placing third at the NCAA Marana Regional in Marana, Ariz.
Sutton graduated from UAB in 2014 with a degree in accounting. As a student-athlete, Sutton appeared on the Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll, was tabbed a UAB Student-Athlete of the Week multiple times, and became the first Blazer to be named to a C-USA All-Academic team (2012) since 2009. He went on to play professionally with the Hopkins Tour, National Golf Association and Web.com Tour following graduation.
