UAB Secures Series Win Over Belmont with Second Run-Rule of Weekend

BIRMINGHAM – UAB Baseball got out front early and never looked back on Sunday afternoon as the Blazers (12-8) took down Belmont (8-12) by a score of 12-2. Despite only tallying nine hits, the Green and Gold made the most of their nine walks drawn on the day.
UAB recorded its second run-rule victory of the weekend over the Bruins, outscoring BU 25-5 in those two games.
The Blazers got the scoring started in the bottom of the first when Andrew Hunt singled home Landon Beaver to give UAB an early 1-0 lead. UAB advances to 9-0 when scoring first and 8-2 when scoring in the first inning.
The Green and Gold responded with four more runs in the bottom of the second. Alex Dupuy dropped a single into center field to bring home Kevin Hall Jr. and Austin Pierzynski. After an intentional walk, Landon Beaver was hit by a pitch which scored Baylor Roberts. Andrew Hunt also walked with the bases loaded to cap off the 4-run inning. All base runners got on base with two outs.
Four more crossed the plate in the bottom half of the fourth for UAB. Andrew Hunt reached on a fielder's choice as two runs scored on a Belmont error. Hunt and Landon Beaver would come around to score on a Brady Waugh triple to put UAB up, 9-0 after four innings.
Belmont would score its two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Brody Langlotz and Nate Webb both crossed the plate in the inning to cut the UAB lead to 9-2.
Christian Helmers and Brendan Conner were stellar in their respective outings combining for one earned run across eight innings of work. The duo struck out five and allowed four hits. Conner was credited with his second win of the season.
The Blazers pushed their final three runs across in the bottom of the eighth inning. Wesley Helms got the scoring started on a sac fly which scored Landon Beaver. Brady Waugh scored on another Belmont miscue to bring up Baylor Roberts. Roberts would bring home Kevin Hall Jr. on a single to clinch the 12-2 run-rule victory.
NOTES
- Landon Beaver recorded his fifth multi-hit game of the season.
- Brady Waugh's two hits were good for his seventh multi-hit game which ranks second on the team.
- Waugh (6), Andrew Hunt (4), and Alex Dupuy (4) all picked up multi-RBI games. Waugh's six multi-RBI games lead the team.
- In his first career start, Christian Helmers tossed a career-high 4.1 innings pitched and surrendered just one run.
- Brendan Conner picked up the win as he threw the final 3.2 innings of the game. Conner struck out two and allowed one hit and no runs and recorded his third career win.
- UAB improves to 8-0 when it outhits its opponents.
