UAB Baseball Takes 2-0 Series Lead Over Cincinnati, 8-3

BIRMINGHAM – UAB Baseball (4-2) took game two of the series against Cincinnati (3-3) on Friday afternoon as the Blazers won in convincing fashion, 8-3. The Green and Gold blasted four home runs for the second consecutive day.

The Bearcats jumped out front first on Friday after both sides were held scoreless through two innings. With two outs, UC drew its third walk of the inning. With runners on the corners, the Bearcats scored their first run on a Blazer error to go up, 1-0. The next batter, Derrick Pitts beat out an infield single to add to the UC advantage.

UAB jumped out in front in the bottom half of the third inning with three solo home runs in the first four batters of the inning. Wesley Helms hit his first home run of the season, while Baylor Roberts and Kevin Hall Jr. each hit their second. Roberts has now homered in back-to-back days.

Andrew Hunt singled in the bottom half of the fourth and later stole second. With one out, Brady Waugh continued his hot stretch with an RBI single to score Hunt to put the Blazers up, 4-2. Waugh now has eight RBI through the last three games.

The Blazers added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth. After back-to-back singles to start the inning, Alex Dupuy advanced the runners on a sacrifice bunt which brought up John Paul Head who reached on an error to score Baylor Roberts. The next batter, Landon Beaver scored Kevin Hall Jr. on a sacrifice fly to put UAB up, 6-2.

UC added a run back in the top half of the sixth on a solo home run by Charlie Niehaus.

UAB's third multi-run inning of the day came in the bottom of the seventh inning. After back-to-back groundouts and Kevin Hall Jr. reaching first via hit by pitch, Alex Dupuy hit a towering two-run home run for his first home run as a Blazer which put UAB up, 8-3.

Konner Keplinger pitched the final 3.0 innings to record his first save. Keplinger did not allow a run, surrendered two hits, and struck out two. Isaac Warrick picked up his first win of the season and the fourth of his career.

NOTES

- The Blazers hit four home runs for the second straight game. It is the first time UAB has done so under Casey Dunn.

- UAB added its third Power 4 win of the season. In Casey Dunn's tenure, the Blazers now have 10 Power 4 wins.

- Baylor Roberts recorded his second multi-hit game in as many days to go along with his second home run in the same instance.

- Andrew Hunt also picked up his second multi-hit game of the season. Hunt and Brady Waugh each carry a 4-game hit streak into Saturday.

- Kevin Hall Jr. tallied his team-best third multi-hit game.

- All six of Wesley Helms' hits this season have come in the last three games.

- The Green and Gold are now 4-0 when scoring at least eight runs. In three of those wins, the Blazers have picked up at least nine hits.

UAB and Cincinnati play game three of the four game series on Saturday at Young Memorial Field. First pitch from YMF will be at 1 p.m.
