Men’s Basketball Sneaks by ECU in Overtime

GREENVILLE - The UAB Men's Basketball team (11-6) beat East Carolina (5-11) 87-85 in overtime on Sunday afternoon. Jacob Meyer scored season high 29 points on 12-of-20 shooting. KyeRon Lindsay-Martin scored 20 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks.
Jordan Riley led East Carolina with 30 points, 10 rebounds, and two assists. East Carolina had three double-doubles in Reid Cason, Giovanni Emejuru, Jordan Riley.

- UAB started 2-for-5 from the free throw line, but finished with 14 made free throws.
- East Carolina out rebounded the Blazers 47-38, marking the fourth game in a row that UAB has been out rebounded.
- Lindsay-Martin started 5-of-6 from the field and had an early 10 points.
- UAB continued the pressure on defense forcing the Pirates into nine first half turnovers.
- Despite being out rebounded in the first half, UAB led points in the paint 20-16.
- UAB tried to dominate the pace and they did, scoring 21 fast break points compared to just 12 from ECU.
- Rivera failed to get to 10+ points for the first time in four games. He had three straight games of scoring 10+ before that.
- UAB had two 20+ scorers for the first time since Nov. 24 against Southern Illinois. Jacob Meyer's 29 points was a season high along with 20 from Lindsay-Martin.
- UAB shot 45.5% from the field (35-for-77), 23.1% from three (3-for-13), and 66.7% from the free-throw line (14-for-21).
- East Carolina scored on their first possession of the game and that served as the first points of the game [0-2].
- Lindsay-Martin took it to the rim and got fouled, scoring his sixth point of the night [14-15].
- UAB regained the lead when Ari Gooch put together a fast break reverse layup with Under 12 minutes to go in the half [16-15].
- A 7-2 UAB run including an Evan Chatman three, gave the Blazers a three point lead heading into the Under eight media timeout [27-24].
- Jordan Riley ignited a 6-0 run for ECU late in the first half. He made two mid-range jumpers to put the Pirates back in front [32-35].
- It was a 9-5 run out of halftime for the Blazers that gave them a six point lead [48-42].
- After a bucket by the Isaiah Mbeng,East Carolina turned the ball over twice giving UAB some easy points and a 6-0 run [54-44].
- Chance Westry scored a fast break lay up and gave UAB their largest lead of the game at 12 points [58-46].
- The two teams went back and fourth for the next few minutes until, ECU started mounting their comeback at the 7:01 mark when they got to within five points [67-62].
- Lindsay-Martin rolled off a screen and dunked one home to put UAB ahead 71-64 with four minutes to play.
- Down the stretch, East Carolina picked up stops and was able to hit the three ball (something they had not done all year). This included an 8-0 run that gave ECU the lead with just 2:29 to play [73-74].
- Daniel Rivera scored a driving layup to put UAB up three points before East Carolina's Mbeng tied it late with a three-point shot [79-79].
- For the second time in two weeks the Blazers have gone into overtime. The first being at South Florida on Jan. 4.
- Both teams started out the extra period flat with just three points scored in the first four possessions.
- Jacob Meyer tied it at 85 with 2:20 to go on a mid-range jumper. Then he gave the team the go ahead points with 16 seconds on the clock ending his night with a season high 29 points [87-85].
- Final score: UAB 87, East Carolina 85
- UAB is back on the road Wednesday, Jan. 14 at Tulane. Tip off is set for 6:30 p.m. CT.
