Blazers Split Doubleheader With UTSA

BIRMINGHAM - UAB Baseball (18-14, 3-6) split the day with UTSA (25-9, 7-2) on Saturday. The Roadrunners took Game 1 by a score of 6-3. The Blazers rallied in Game 2, winning 13-6 on Saturday night.
GAME 1
UAB jumped out first for the second game in a row. In the bottom of the 2nd, Mayes White flew out to center and advanced Tyler Waugh to third, but a wild throw entered the Blazer dugout which allowed Waugh to score and gave the Blazers a 1-0 lead.
It was more of the same in the bottom half of the third when Gavin Lewis Jr. sent a sac fly to right to score Wesley Helms to double the Blazer advantage.
UTSA bounced back in the top of the 4th when Norris McClure singled through the right side to score Andrew Stucky to cut the Blazer lead to 2-1.
In the UAB half of the 4th, Logan Braunschweig extended his on-base streak to 59 games with a home run to right to give the Green and Gold a 3-1 lead. The home run was his fifth of the season.
The big inning for the Roadrunners came in their half of the 7th. With two outs and one on, Caden Miller doubled home Jordan Ballin to bring the deficit to 3-2. Then, Mason Lytle reached on an infield single. With Miller running on the play, he was able to score from second and tied the game at three. After a pitching change, Drew Detlefsen sent an opposite field home run to right to put UTSA ahead for the first time, 5-3.
The Roadrunners picked up their final run of the game in the top of the 9th when Lytle delivered a sac fly to score Ballin.
Christian Okerholm pitched four innings out of the bullpen and only allowed the home run to Braunschweig. Robert Orloski picked up his first save of the season by pitching the final two innings and giving UTSA the 6-3 win.
GAME 2
An offensive explosion occurred in game 2 as 19 runs crossed the plate in eight and a half innings. Additionally, the game saw 24 hits and 12 walks.
However, the scoring did not start until the top of the third when Diego Diaz sent a solo home run to right to put the Roadrunners on the board.
The first of Todd Clay's three hits was an RBI double down the right field line to score Gavin Lewis Jr. and Logan Braunschweig to put the Blazers up 2-1. Braunschweig has now reached base safely in 60 consecutive games.
Nathan Hodge tied the game for UTSA on a safety squeeze bunt that scored Norris McClure from third.
The Roadrunners took the lead in the top of the 5th when James Taussig doubled in the left center field gap that scored Mason Lytle. Andrew Stucky then doubled down the right field line to give UTSA a 4-2 lead.
Todd Clay's second 2 RBI base hit came in the bottom half of the 5th when he scored Lewis and Braunschweig again to tie the game at four.
In the top of the 6th, Caden Miller singled to score Ty Hodge to put the Roadrunners back in front 5-4.
UTSA got a big insurance run in the top of the 8th when Lytle got to third and a throwing error scored him to give the Roadrunners a 6-4 advantage.
Then, the Blazers got busy in the bottom of the 8th. Camden Hayslip tied the game with a full count 2 RBI double down the right field line. After Jax Yoxtheimer bunted and reached on a fielder's choice, the Green and Gold had runners on first and third with nobody out. Tyler Waugh then singled through the right side to give the Blazers a 7-6 lead.
Braunschweig walked with the bases loaded to add to the UAB lead. Todd Clay's third 2 RBI hit of the night was a single to left center to score Alex Cheeseman and Gavin Lewis Jr. Clay finished the day with a career-high 6 RBI.
With the bases loaded again, Nick Hollifield was hit by pitch and scored Braunschweig to give the Blazers an 11-6 lead. Then, Hayslip's second 2 RBI base hit of the inning was a single up the middle and gave UAB a 13-6 lead.
Braxton Shelton tossed the final four innings for the Blazers and earned his second win of the season. The junior struck out four and allowed just one run which was unearned.
The Blazers return to action on Tuesday when they host Mississippi State at Young Memorial Field. First pitch will be at 6 p.m. with Curt Bloom and Alan Dunn calling the game on ESPN+ and David Crane carrying the game on the Blazer Sports Network.
