Daniel Wins Pitchers' Duel, Blazers Take Down Rice

BIRMINGHAM - UAB (21-21, 6-10) used one pitcher to get past Rice (11-32, 5-11) on Friday night, 3-0. Colin Daniel tossed a complete game shutout, striking out 13 Rice hitters without surrendering a walk, and allowed just three hits. Daniel faced 28 hitters and had a strike percentage of 73.1%.

The Blazers got on the board first in the bottom of the 1st. Logan Braunschweig singled through the left side. He would steal second and advance to third on a fly out. With one down, Todd Clay grounded out to second to score Braunschweig and put the Blazers up 1-0.

Overshadowed by Daniel all night, Rice's Davion Hickson also had a stellar performance. The junior right-hander tossed 7.2 innings, allowed three runs and struck out 10 Blazers on 122 pitches.

Neither side would score again until the bottom of the 8th. Gavin Lewis Jr. got the rally started with a two-out single. He would advance to second on a walk by Braunschweig. Wesley Helms came up and delivered a two-strike single to score Lewis and put the Green and Gold up 2-0. Todd Clay's second RBI of the night came on a single through the right side to score Braunschweig and added to the Blazers' advantage.

Daniel would strike out the side in the 9th to cap off his 13-strikeout performance and carry the Blazers to the 3-0 win.

NOTES

Colin Daniel pitched his second career complete game, his first shutout. His 13 strikeouts were a career-high.
Wesley Helms recorded his eighth multi-hit game of the season. It was his sixth game with exactly two hits.
Todd Clay picked up his team-leading 12th multi-RBI game of the year. Clay has also reached base safely in nine consecutive games.
Logan Braunschweig has reached base in 41 of 42 games this season. After two stolen bases tonight, his 23 bags lead the American Conference. He also picked up his 196th career hit with a single in the 1st inning.
Tyler Waugh has reached base safely in 12 straight games.

The Blazers and Owls square off in the second game of the series on Saturday afternoon at Young Memorial Field with a first pitch time of 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
