BIRMINGHAM – The UAB Softball team (15-19, 5-7) beat Memphis (15-20, 4-8) 8-4 on Saturday night in rainy weather conditions.
IN THE INNINGS
Three more first inning runs boosted the Blazers to an early lead. AJ Kramer made her second start hitting a ball off the wall in the first inning that scored two runs. This was her first RBIs of the year. The other run came off an RBI single from Hope Tucker.
Caroline McLendon retired the first six batters with ease, causing four groundouts. UAB left one on base in the second and three on the base in the third.The Blazers left another three on in the fourth inning for a total of six through four innings.
A couple of huge defensive plays kept a no hitter alive into the sixth inning. Hannah Miles, Alyssa Aguilar, and Bella Wiggins all had diving catches. McLendon had a perfect game going into the sixth inning, but two errors, a walk, and a triple ended that. UAB led 5-3 after six innings.
In the top of the seventh, Auburn Dupree came in to run for Antonia Henderson, who walked. Britt Bourgyne stepped up and got a single through the left side that put runners on first and second. Wiggins blasted a ball down the right field line to score both of those runs. UAB shut down the Tigers in the seventh and won the game 8-4.
