BIRMINGHAM - UAB (15-9, 1-2) dropped the final game of the weekend to South Florida (13-9, 2-1) on Sunday afternoon, 9-7. The Bulls outhit the Blazers 16-7 this afternoon. Both teams combined for seven home runs.
USF and Ryan Pruitt picked up right where he left off yesterday as he hit a leadoff home run for the second game in a row, this time on the first pitch of the game.
The Green and Gold got off to a hot start as well. The first two Blazer batters reached on 4-pitch walks. Todd Clay drove both runners in on a 2-run single to put the Blazers on top, 2-1.
Both teams were held scoreless from that point until the 4th inning. In the Bulls half of the 4th, Bradke Lohry drove his first home run of the season out to left center field to put the Bulls up 3-2.
In the top of the 6th, Lohry was at it again as he tagged another home run to give the Bulls a 4-2 lead. Three batters later, Chris Jacome sent a ball over the left field fence for a 3-run home run to blow the game open for the Bulls. USF added its fifth run of the inning as Sebastian Greico reached on a fielder's choice to put the Bulls up 8-2.
Logan Braunschweig cranked the first pitch of the bottom of the 6th over the right field fence for his third home run of the year as the Blazers then trailed 8-3.
Camden Hayslip also hit his third home run of the season in the bottom of the 7th to close the Bulls lead to 8-4.
In the bottom of the 8th, it was Hayslip again as he rocketed a 3-run shot over the right field fence to cut the USF to 8-7.
The Bulls added a big insurance run in the top of the 9th on a Lance Trippel solo home run to straight away center field to end the scoring for the day.
Jack Nedrow came on in relief for the Bulls in the 1st inning and pitched six innings, allowed two runs, struck out six, and didn't allow a walk. Jorge DeCardenas pitched the final three innings of the game to pick up his first save of the year.
The Blazers return to action on Tuesday when Jacksonville State comes to Young Memorial Field. First pitch on Tuesday is at 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
