UAB Splits Day Two at Samford Invitational

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB Softball team (5-3) beat Indiana State (1-5) in walk off fashion and lost to Samford (4-2) on day two of the Samford Invitational.

GAME ONE
This was only the second time UAB has ever faced off against Indiana State, with the first time coming in 2000.

Just three runs came across the plate in game one against Indiana State. Bella Wiggins stole her ninth bag of the season in the first inning. Antonia Henderson helped the Blazers score first on a wild pitch in the second inning.

Indiana State answered in the fourth inning with a run of their own.

Bella Wiggins added to her great start to the season going two for three with one run scored.

No more runs scored until the 7th inning when the bases were loaded with a 1-1 score. Alyssa Aguilar stepped up and hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Bella Wiggins to walk it off. UAB won the game 2-1.

GAME TWO
UAB and Samford faced off in their second game of the weekend on Saturday afternoon. Bella Wiggins and Lindsey Smith scored in the first inning on a wild pitch and a passed ball.

A total of 23 runs were scored in this game and a total of 26 hits. The Bulldogs put up six first inning runs on top of five hits and an error. UAB answered with a run in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Wiggins. Another four runs came across which gave Samford a 10-3 lead after two innings.

Two home runs in three at bats by Alyssa Aguilar and Brantlee Wortham cut into the Samford lead. This was the first career home run for freshman Brantlee Wortham.

Samford added another five runs to lead 16-6 after four. UAB would have to score at least three runs to continue the game into the sixth inning. The Blazers got the bases full and Hope Tucker got an RBI walk, but no other runs would come across the plate and Samford won this one 16-7.

UP NEXT
UAB is back in action tomorrow as the Blazers take on Indiana State at 1:30 p.m.
