TIME TO REVERSE TRENDS
The Blazers are seeking consecutive wins in true road matches since Feb. 7-8, 2021, when the Blazers won back-to-back matches at North Texas, 3-2 and 3-0.
A win would also mark the first time the UAB has swept a season series in conference play since joining the American in 2023. UAB last swept a season series in 2022 when the Blazers went 2-0 against both Middle Tennessee State and Charlotte. UAB has not swept the Green Wave since 2011, defeating Tulane 3-2 and 3-0.
SCOUTING TULANE
The Green Wave was riding an eight-match losing streak into the weekend, but overcame its demons on Halloween with a win over UTSA.
Tulane opened the conference season with a disheartening home loss to Memphis, now the Tigers' only win in American play. Tulane followed the loss with a sweep against Temple before losing to Charlotte, East Carolina, North Texas, South Florida, and Rice to fall to 1-6 in American play when they met UAB the first time around. The Blazers swept Tulane in Birmingham. The Green Wave has lost 3-1 at Wichita State and Rice before snapping their streak with a 3-2 win over UTSA.
Tulane does not boast a top-100 RPI victory with its best win against No. 127 Southeastern Louisiana. Besides the SELA, Tulane's only win against a team ranked higher than UAB is the Green Wave's lone conference win against Temple.
The Tulane offense runs through Avery Burks. The junior outside leads the country in attacks per set (13.05) and ranks in the top-40 in total kills (24th, 301) and total points (37th, 369.5). Defense has been a strong suit for Tulane, with 17.67 digs per set, the fifth-best mark in the country.
SERIES HISTORY
The Blazers have defeated the Green Wave in the programs' last two meetings, including a 3-0 win just two weekends ago. UAB looks to keep the streak alive with its first win at Tulane since 2011.
Tulane leads the all-time series 24-14 and is 13-4 at their home arena.
A LOOK AROUND THE AMERICAN
Temple's 3-1 upset win against Charlotte tied the Owls for eighth in the standings, level with UTSA. Following Friday's results, five teams are within just two games of a postseason spot.
Friday's big result for the Blazers was Tulane's 3-2 win over UTSA, putting UAB within two games of a tie for the last American Championships spot. Both teams tied for eighth place, UTSA and Temple, hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Blazers, meaning UAB would either have to pass both teams outright or find themselves in a multi-team tiebreaker with a team UAB has beaten multiple times.
