NEW ORLEANS - UAB Volleyball swept the season series against Tulane for the first time since 2011 with a 3-1 road victory on Sunday. After failing to capitalize on an eight-point comeback in the first set, the Blazers dominated three straight sets on the back of Jorda Crook's 25 kills.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Green Wave jumped out to a 7-1 lead, forcing an early UAB timeout. The Blazers chipped away until a Tulane four-point run expanded the lead to eight. The Green Wave maintained its advantage until an eight-point run by the Blazers put UAB ahead 22-21. Tulane responded out of its second timeout with a 4-1 run to win the set 25-23.
UAB was all over Tulane in the second set, taking an 11-4 lead before adding a six-point run to force the Green Wave to use both of its timeouts at 13-5 and 17-5. Tulane was able to make the set respectable, winning half of the last 16 points as UAB cruised to a 25-13 set victory. Crook dominated the set with eight kills on 13 attempts, leading the Blazers to hit .448 in the frame.
The Green Wave kept the third set close with the Blazers, down just two heading into the media timeout. Four consecutive points for UAB out of the break gave the Blazers the cushion needed to ease into a 25-21 win. Crook added seven more kills in the set to total 20 through three frames.
Set four followed a similar path as set three, with both teams battling to a 15-13 UAB lead at the media timeout before the Blazers pulled away. This time around, UAB used a 6-1 run to take a 21-15 lead. UAB then used a 4-1 run, including three Tulane errors, to clinch the set and match victory.
