BIRMINGHAM – Despite a gutsy defensive effort from the Blazers, the UAB football team fell to Army 31-13 on Saturday afternoon at Protective Stadium.
UAB (2-3, 0-2 American) held Army (2-3, 1-1 American) to just 295 yards of total offense, but turnovers and missed field goals plagued the Blazers which ultimately led to Army outscoring UAB 21-6 in the second half. Army also controlled time of possession, 36:41-23:19.
The Blazers outgained the Black Knight 362-295 with 259 coming through the air and 103 on the ground. Army did most of its damage on the ground by rushing for 247 yards, led by quarterback Cale Hellums who had 81 yards and three rushing scores.
Defensively for UAB, Calvin Pitcher paced the Blazers with 10 tackles and he was followed by Devin Hightower and Jonathan Allen who each had nine stops. The nine tackles for Allen established a new career high for the sophomore interior lineman.
UAB received the opening kickoff and its first drive resulted in blocked field goal. Army then took its first drive 18 plays which lasted the remainder of the quarter and the Black Knights cashed that into seven points on a 3-yard rush from Hayden Reed with 13:47 left in the second quarter. Army used 10:34 off the clock and converted both of its fourth-down tries.
It took the Blazers until 1:16 left in the first half to get on the board, and following a big 47-yard completion from Jalen Kitna to Iverson Hooks, Xavier Daisy caught his first career touchdown to tie the game at 7-7. Following UAB's touchdown, Army went 40 yards in eight plays and converted a 45-yard field goal to take a 10-7 lead at halftime.
UAB's defense forced a three-and-out on Army's first possession of the second half, but the Blazers were unable to capitalize as its ensuing drive resulted in another missed field. Army then surged ahead by 10 with a 9-play, 80-yard drive capped by a 5-yard rushing touchdown from Hellums with 5:11 left in the third.
Special teams continued to hamper the Blazers as UAB fumbled the ensuing kickoff, but the defense once again stepped up and got a fourth down stop which kept the score at 17-7.
UAB's next possession resulted in an interception to set up Army in the red zone. Five plays later, Hellums rushed in his second touchdown from 1-yard out to give the Black Knights a 24-7 lead with 14:18 remaining in the fourth.
Hellums added a third rushing score with 4:10 remaining in the contest to stretch the Army lead to 31-7. UAB backup quarterback Ryder Burton punched in a 1-yard score with :54 remaining and UAB missed the 2-point conversion to make the final score 31-13.
UAB now travels to Florida Atlantic for an American Conference contest next Saturday, Oct. 11. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET/5 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
