Slow Start Dooms UAB in 53-33 Loss at Florida Atlantic

The Owls (3-3, 2-1 American) raced out to a 28-0 lead early in the second quarter and never looked back. FAU outgained UAB 492-329, and a season-high 14 penalties put the Blazers (2-4, 0-3 American) behind the sticks all night long.
Solomon Beebe had a standout game for UAB by leading the team in rushing and receiving while scoring two touchdowns. He had 119 total all-purpose yards in the contest.
However, it was FAU's air attack that led the Owls to victory by throwing for 345 yards and four touchdowns. FAU quarterback Caden Veltkamp threw for 297 of those yards and three touchdowns.
Trailing by 28, Beebe got the Blazers back in the game with consecutive rushing touchdowns of 14 and 13 yards late in the second quarter. His second score was set up courtesy of a Devin Hightower interception, and UAB cut the lead in half to 28-14 with 3:15 remaining in the opening half.
However, FAU converted a 4th-and-5 for a 43-yard touchdown with 1:29 left which gave the Owls a 35-14 lead at halftime.
The two teams traded a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter, while UAB converted two 2-point attempts and FAU converted one, which made the score 50-30 heading into the fourth quarter.
One field goal for each team concluded the scoring in the fourth quarter to make the final score 53-33.
The Blazers return to Protective Stadium next Saturday to host No. 24 Memphis. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. on ESPN2.
