DENTON, Texas – The UAB women's soccer team closed out the regular season in thrilling fashion Thursday night, defeating North Texas 3-2 at the Mean Green Soccer Stadium.
The Blazers (7-5-6, 4-3-3 AAC) struck early when Lailah Stewart netted her seventh goal of the season in the 16th minute, assisted by Abbey Burns. The first half ended 1-0, with UAB holding a narrow edge in possession and shots.
UAB doubled its lead in the 59th minute when Burns found the back of the net for her first goal of the year, set up by Lauren Lucero. Less than 20 minutes later, the Blazers extended the margin to 3-0 as Caitlin Keeling scored her second of the season, again with Burns providing the assist, her second of the match.
North Texas (6-10-4, 2-5-3 AAC) made things interesting late, responding with a goal from Rachel Roebuck in the 78th minute before an own goal six minutes later to cut the deficit to one. Despite the late push, goalkeeper Leah Parsons and the UAB defense held strong to secure the victory.
UAB outshot North Texas 17-16 but put 11 of those efforts on target compared to the Mean Green's three. Parsons tallied two saves in the win, while North Texas keeper Hicks Bishop finished with eight.
The win gives UAB a spot in the American Conference Championship as the No. 4 seed and will face off against No. 5 seeded UTSA. UAB tied UTSA (1-1) in the regular season on Sept. 25. The conference championship will be played in Lakewood Ranch, Florida on Nov. 3 at 4:00 p.m.
