WHAT TO WATCH FOR:
- Saturday marks the return game of a home-and-home series. UConn won the first game between the two programs last year in Birmingham by erasing a 20-3 halftime deficit for a 31-23 victory.
- UAB's defense is coming off its best performance of the season by holding Memphis to 362 yards and 17 points (excluding Memphis' kickoff return TD). The Blazers will have to be stout against a UConn team that ranks 17th nationally in total offense.
- Leading the way for UConn is veteran quarterback Joey Fagnano who has thrown for this sixth most yards nationally this year (2,262) with 18 touchdowns and has not thrown an interception. Fagnano is 260 yards away from 10,000 passing yards for his career which spans seven seasons at Maine and UConn. Overall, he has 84 career passing touchdowns to just 17 interceptions.
- Iverson Hooks looks to keep his momentum going after a career performance against Memphis in which he set career highs in catches (11), yards (172) and touchdowns (3). He is now leading the American Conference in receiving yards per game (80.0) and for the season has 41 catches for 560 yards and five touchdowns.
- Running back Solomon Beebe is also putting together a very strong season as he ranks 10th nationally in all-purpose yards per game (126.0). Beebe is a weapon all over the field with 216 rushing yards, 239 receiving yards and 428 kickoff return yards with six total touchdowns. His 81-yard touchdown vs. Memphis was the longest rushing score in program history.
- A key to UAB's success against Memphis was winning the time of possession by converting 9-of-13 on third downs (.692). The Blazers are 44 percent on third down for the season which ranks them 37th nationally in that category.
- The Blazers will look to snap a 15-game road losing streak this weekend against a UConn team that is 35-18 in non-conference games at home since becoming independent in 2020.
