UAB Falls at UConn, 38-19

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. – The UAB football team sustained a 38-19 loss at UConn on Saturday afternoon at Pratt and Whitney Stadium.
Brandon Hawkins Jr. scored two of the three UAB touchdowns, but the Blazers (3-5) had tough sledding on both sides of the ball as UConn (6-3) turned UAB over three times while adding five sacks. UConn's Cam Chadwick had all three of the Huskies interceptions along with seven tackles, a sack and a forced fumble.
UAB trailed 7-0 at the end of the first quarter, then found itself down 24-0 at halftime. UConn quarterback Joey Fagnano would throw his fourth touchdown pass of the game in the third quarter to increase the Huskies lead to 31-0. Fagnano finished 20-of-30 for 267 yards and four touchdowns, and in the process went over 10,000 career passing yards.
Hawkins Jr. got UAB on the board with a 68-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter and added a 32-yard rushing score on a broken play early in the fourth. Kaleb Brown scored UAB's third touchdown on a 13-yard pass with seven seconds remaining in the contest.
Ryder Burton saw the majority of the playing time at quarterback for UAB after replacing starter Jalen Kitna on the third series. Burton was 21-of-30 for 209 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.
The Blazers return to action next Saturday with an American Conference contest at Rice. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
