STATISTICAL ANOMALIES
UAB out-killed and out-blocked Temple, Friday night in Philadelphia, despite losing the match in five sets. The Blazers' 56 kills were tied for the most by UAB in an American match this season, and 11 blocks were the most the Blazers had tallied since Oct. 5 vs UTSA (13). This marked the second time this season the Blazers lost when leading in both categories, with the other coming in the Oct. 5 match vs the Roadrunners.
The Blazers were conservative behind the service line on Sunday against Florida Atlantic, not recording any service errors for the first time under Head Coach Betsy Freeburg, and the first time since at least 2015. UAB also only tallied one ace against FAU, the fewest this season.
SCOUTING MEMPHIS
The Tigers enter the week tied with UAB for last at 1-9 in conference play, each earning its lone win over Tulane. Memphis ranks last in the American in the NCAA RPI Report at 228, 24 spots behind 12th-place Tulane. Since winning its conference opener, Memphis is on a nine-match skid in American play. However, the Tigers picked up a non-conference win over Alabama A&M, 3-0, on Oct. 15.
Memphis does not rank in the top 100 in any per-set metrics nationally. However, Memphis does crack the century mark in total assists (58th, 1,009), total kills (65th, 1,078), and total attacks (83rd, 2,941).
The Tigers' best win, according to the RPI Report, is their 3-1 victory over the Green Wave to open American play. 0-13 against teams currently within the top 200, Memphis has only won nine sets in those 13 matches.
SERIES HISTORY
The Blazers and Tigers share the longest all-time series in UAB history, with UAB's 3-1 win last season being the 60th installation of the series. The Tigers lead the series 37-23, including an 18-4 run from the early 90's to early 00's. Before UAB won last season's matchup, Memphis was on a five-match winning streak, winning 15 of the 16 sets during the run.
Memphis has defended its home court successfully the last three times the Blazers and Tigers met in Bluff City. UAB has not won at Memphis since October 2012.
A LOOK AROUND THE AMERICAN
South Florida took a big leap in the NCAA RPI report, jumping 14 spots from 41 to 27 after a 2-0 week. Rice, currently tied with USF for the conference lead, moved up a few spots after a pair of wins last week. Despite losing to North Texas, Tulsa only dropped five spots in the RPI, down to 53. The Mean Green's win over Tulsa jumped North Texas 21 spots in the RPI, now giving the American seven teams in the top 100.
Looking back at last week, the shock result in the American was East Carolina's sweep over Charlotte. The Pirates picked up a key win in a week they were projected to go 0-2. East Carolina now only sits one game behind UTSA, the final team in the qualification zone for the American Championships.
This week, Tulsa heads to South Florida for a big season-defining rematch for both teams. The Golden Hurricane came out on top when the teams met in the Sooner State. Now, the Bulls look to keep their spot atop the American standings.
