Blazers' Reverse Sweep Bid Falls Short

PHILADELPHIA - UAB Volleyball fought back from down two sets to force a fifth set, but could not hold onto its lead, falling at Temple in five sets. Three Blazers recorded double-doubles, the first time three UAB players have done so this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Blazers used a 5-1 run to take an early 7-3 lead over the Owls. However, Temple responded with its own 5-1 run to tie at 11-11. The Owls kept their momentum, going on a four-point run immediately after. UAB was able to chip away at the Temple lead, even taking the lead back and serving for set point. A pair of UAB service errors allowed Temple to regain the lead and clinch the first set on an Alyssa Finister kill. Jorda Crook led the way offensively for the Blazers with seven kills in the set.
After a 5-5 tie to start the set, an 8-2 Temple run opened up the set in favor of the Owls. Despite the Blazers pulling back within two points, Temple kept the momentum throughout the set and cruised to a 25-20 set win. Temple outhit the Blazers .344-.121 in the set.
UAB took a 5-2 lead to begin the third frame. However, five straight errors by UAB put Temple up two. The Owls continued to roll to start the set, taking an 11-7 lead. A UAB four-point run neutralized the Temple advantage, leading to a back-and-forth that saw eight straight tie scores until back-to-back points gave UAB a 23-21 lead. The Owls tied at 23, allowing for four more consecutive tie scores. After a Mia Reese kill tied the set at 26, an Addyson Smock ace and Temple attack error clinched UAB's first set.
The Blazers dominated in the fourth set, outhitting Temple .237-.111. An 11-6 lead to begin the frame set up UAB for a comfortable set. The Blazers extended their lead with a 6-1 run to take a 17-9 lead. Just when Temple looked to begin a comeback, the Blazers used a 4-1 run to clinch the set, 25-18. Crook hit .636 in the set with seven errorless kills on 11 swings.
Temple took a 3-1 lead in the deciding set with an ace, but a five-point run by the Blazers gave UAB a three-point lead. The Owls turned the set on its head, winning six of the next seven points, taking a lead into the set break. UAB tied the set off back-to-back Owl errors, then traded points with Temple to a 12-12 tie. Three consecutive kills clinched the match for Temple, fending off the UAB reverse sweep.
STANDOUTS
Crook's 21 kills were a match-high and marked her fourth 20-kill performance and first in conference play. Crook notched her fifth double-double of the season with 10 kills.
Four Blazers recorded double-digit digs. Bowser, with 16 digs, led the way for the seventh time in the last eight matches. Izabella Carter, Reese, and Crook had 13, 12, and 10, respectively.
Carter set a season-high with 32 assists while recording her fourth double-double of the season.
Reese's third double-double of the season saw 13 kills and 12 digs, while also leading the Blazers with three solo blocks.

The Blazers return home to Bartow Arena to host Florida Atlantic at 12 p.m. on Sunday, October 26. Florida Atlantic will enter the match 5-3 in American play, 14-7 overall.
