SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
Temple
The Owls enter the week in a four-way tie for ninth place with the Blazers, Tulane, and Memphis, all at 1-7. Temple's lone win came during the Owls' conference opener at preseason conference favorites, Rice. The Owls shocked Rice in five sets, but have lost their last seven matches. Rice is Temple's only top-100 victory according to the October 20 RPI rankings. Preseason wins at Georgetown and George Washington are the only other top-200 wins for Temple.
Temple ranks 17th in the country in total digs (1,276) and 32nd in digs per set (15.95). The Owls also rank in the top-50 in attacks (12th, 3,012), attacks per set (16th, 37.65), kills (34th, 1,023), and assists (47th, 930).
Florida Atlantic
Florida Atlantic has only faced five unique opponents through four weeks of American Conference play. The Owls swept their season series against East Carolina and Temple, but lost both of their matches to Charlotte. Outside of the three home-and-aways, the Owls defeated North Texas and lost to South Florida; both matches ended in four sets.
Despite being ranked 73rd in the latest RPI report, FAU does not boast a top-100 victory. The Owls are 14-1 in quad four matches (RPI 101+), with FAU's only "bad loss" being a sweep against Texas Tech.
FAU ranks 28th in the country in kills per set with 13.75 and 31st in the nation in assists per set with 12.71.
SERIES HISTORY
Temple
UAB and Temple each look to take an edge in the all-time series, deadlocked in a 2-2 tie. UAB won the first meeting between the programs in 1991, but Temple has a 2-1 edge since joining the American in 2023. The Blazers swept the Owls last season at Bartow Arena. Home teams are 3-0 in the series all-time.
Florida Atlantic
The Blazers have won three of the last four against Florida Atlantic to make up ground in the all-time series. The Owls lead 8-4 since the programs' first meeting in 2013. After UAB won the first matchup in the series, FAU won seven consecutive matches. The Blazers snapped FAU's win streak with back-to-back wins, but could not complete the season sweep in 2023 as FAU swept the Blazers in the last matchup at Bartow Arena. UAB won last season's match, 3-1, in Boca Raton.
A LOOK AROUND THE AMERICAN
Tulsa, Rice, and South Florida sit atop the conference standings, tied at 7-1 with a 1.5 game lead over Charlotte after the 49ers' road loss to East Carolina on Wednesday night. North Texas, Florida Atlantic, and Wichita State sit in a three-way tie of their own just behind Charlotte. UTSA, 4-4, rounds out the top eight who would qualify for the conference tournament if the season ended today.
South Florida takes over as the top-ranked team in the NCAA RPI Report, jumping to 41st, just ahead of Rice at 42. Tulsa rounds out the group at 48. Wichita State (70), Florida Atlantic (73), and Charlotte (86) are the remaining teams in the top-100.
