Blazers Fall to Golden Hurricane

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB Volleyball took its seventh straight-set loss of the season, losing the season series to Tulsa. UAB's struggles behind the service line were noticeable with 11 service errors compared to Tulsa's six.
HOW IT HAPPENED
A 33-31 opening set saw 27 tie scores between the Blazers and Golden Hurricane. Neither team was able to gain momentum in the set, with no scoring runs longer than two points. A Tulsa ace tied the set at 13, the first of 19 consecutive tie scores. Back-to-back Hurricane kills clinched the first set for Tulsa. Both teams boasted side-out percentages above 70% and 20 or more kills.
The second set, still competitive, was a much different story offensively. UAB and Tulsa both hit below .200 for the set. Tulsa pulled out to a 14-9 lead with a 5-1 run. However, a four-point run by the Blazers closed the Tulsa lead to just one before another Golden Hurricane point gave Tulsa a 15-13 lead at the media timeout. Out of the media timeout, the Blazers tied the set at 16, 17, and 18, before a Tulsa three-point run to take a 21-18 lead. That run would be enough for the Golden Hurricane as they cruised to a 25-21 set victory.
Tulsa used another three-point run to pull away in the third set, taking a 14-9 lead after stuffing Jorda Crook at the net. Tulsa maintained its lead, bringing it to 20-15 before the teams traded points until the death. A Brayden Hipp set dump won it for Tulsa, her third kill of the match to go along with a match-high 44 assists. Crook tallied more than half of the Blazers' kills in the frame, notching seven of UAB's 13.
STANDOUTS
The extended first set allowed for inflated stats with multiple three-set bests by the Blazers. Crook's 18 kills were the most in a three or four-set match by a Blazer this season. Crook also notched the most attack attempts and points by a Blazer in a three-set match this season with 50 and 19.0, respectively.
Annastiina Tarkkanen continues to shine as the Blazers' lone setter, tallying 34 assists, the most by a Blazer in a three-set match this season, and the third most overall.
Delaney Bowser extends her streak to six straight matches without a reception error.
Mia Reese finished with 12 kills on 35 attempts. Reese has tallied 12-plus kills in four of her last five matches.
Lia Beverly continues to impress, hitting .385 with five errorless kills on 13 attempts.
