BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB claimed its first American Conference victory of the season with a dominant 3-0 home win against Tulane. Jorda Crook's fourth double-double of the season led the Blazers to hit .333 on the night, while 47 digs and seven blocks held the Green Wave to a .168 efficiency.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a Tulane three-point run gave the Green Wave a 7-5 lead in the opening frame, the Blazers responded with a five-point run with kills from Crook, Abby Jones, and Addyson Smock. UAB never looked back after taking the lead, holding a consistent lead throughout the rest of the set. Crook's seventh kill of the set capped off the 1-0 lead for UAB. Jones recorded four kills on five swings to go along with her block assist.
UAB erased a 3-0 Tulane lead with a six-point run, giving the Blazers a lead it would not lose in the set. UAB slowly widened its lead to nine as Crook and Jones continued to shine offensively for the Blazers. Tulane closed the Blazer lead to four, but a Green Wave attack error clinched the second set for UAB. Jones added five more errorless kills to her tally, one short of Crook's set-high six kills.
The Blazers took advantage of 15 Tulane errors in the third set, forcing seven of them through aces and blocks. After a 9-9 tie, UAB went on a three-point run to pull ahead in the set. The Blazers crept further and further away from Tulane, winning the set 25-16, the largest set victory for UAB since September 13 versus Western Illinois (third set, 25-14).
STANDOUTS
Crook led the Blazers with 16 kills, tied for the most in a three-set match by a Blazer this season. Crook notched her second double-double in as many matches with a team-high 11 digs to go with her team-high kills.
After back-to-back three-set matches with just three kills, Jones tallied 10 kills on just 21 attacks. The .429 hitting percentage is her best of the season.
Annastiina Tarkkanen played her first entire match as the Blazers' lone setter. Tarkkanen tallied 31 assists, the most by a Blazer in a three-set match this season.
Lia Beverly recorded a career-high five blocks, including three in the third set.
A little bit of luck helped the Blazers as both Meg Jarrett and Delaney Bowser recorded a kill off of a dig.
