SCOUTING THE COMPETITION
Tulane
The Green Wave head to Bartow on a four-match losing streak, the fourth worst in a bottom-heavy American conference. Tulane opened the conference season with a disheartening home loss to Memphis, now the Tigers' only win in American play. Tulane followed the loss with a sweep against Temple before losing to Charlotte, East Carolina, North Texas, and South Florida to fall to 1-5 in American play.
Tulane does not boast a top-100 RPI victory with its best win against No. 127 Temple. Besides the Owls, Tulane's only win against a team ranked higher than UAB is a 3-1 victory over No. 131 Southeastern Louisiana.
The Tulane offense runs through Avery Burks. The junior outside leads the country in attacks per set (12.85) and ranks in the top-30 in total kills (22nd, 284) and total points (29th, 304.0).
Defense has been a strong suit for Tulane, with 17.73 digs per set, the third-best mark in the country. The Green Wave has held opponents to a .185 hitting percentage, top-75 in the nation, and fifth best in the American.
Tulsa
The Golden Hurricane's resume has not changed much since UAB visited last week. Following Tulsa's sweep over the Blazers, the Golden Hurricane took down the Memphis Tigers in three sets, extending their streak to 12 consecutive set victories in a row. Tulsa will visit Memphis on Friday, looking to carry its set winning streak into Birmingham on Sunday.
Tulsa sits atop the American in Monday's RPI rankings at 44.
Tulsa has improved offensively over the last week, now ranking in the top-10 nationally in kills per set (ninth, 14.27) and assists per set. The Golden Hurricane's .276 hitting percentage is the 22nd best in DI.
Setter Brayden Hipp won her second consecutive American Setter of the Week title with 67 total assists in a pair of 3-0 victories. Hipp averaged 11.17 assists per set with 4.33 digs per set en route to her third honor of the season. Olivia Vance picked up her third American honorable mention of the season, leading Tulsa in points and kills per set.
SERIES HISTORY
Tulane
UAB snapped a six-match losing streak against Tulane last year with a 3-2 win at Bartow. The Blazers trail the all-time series against the Green Wave, 24-13. Tulane has won nine of the 16 matches in Birmingham.

A LOOK AROUND THE AMERICAN
A four-way tie for first place jams the top of the American standings. Rice's 3-0 win over South Florida knocked the final undefeated team from its pedestal and forced the Bulls to join Rice, Tulsa, and Charlotte at 5-1.
Tulsa (44), South Florida (46), and Rice (49) all sit in the top 50 of this week's RPI. Florida Atlantic (73), Wichita State (78), and Charlotte (88) round out the American squads in the top 100. The American ranks as the sixth-best conference in DI, behind just the A4 conferences and the Big East.
